Hervey Bay Whale Watching
If it’s not already, whale watching in Hervey Bay should be on your bucket list!
The Fraser Coast region offers one-of-a-kind, up close encounters with the humpback whales not available anyone else in the country.
What makes it so special? Hervey Bay is the ONLY spot along the southern humpback migration where the whales actually deviate from the coastline to stay and play in the calm water off Hervey Bay for days at a time.
Protected by Fraser Island, it’s the ideal playground for mothers to teach their new calves, and for more mature humpbacks to find a mate.
Depending on the time in the season you visit, you can expect to see playful newborn calves learning how to breach and tail slap from their mothers, or even pods of more mature male humpbacks competing for the attention of female whales.
Unlike whale watching in the rougher coastal seas where you’d be lucky to see two or three whales on their journey north or south, the high numbers of whales that stop in Hervey Bay means you’re guaranteed encounters with these majestic mammals.

3 Day Trip Report
Here’s what our 2017 whale watching speciality tour included:
The last week of September saw Sunstate Charter take members from a north side retirement village on a 3 day Speciality Tour to witness the majestic humpback whales that visit Hervey Bay each year. The 22 members that travelled were treated to 3 days of lovely weather, good company and great food.
Day 1: Brisbane to Hervey Bay, via Rainbow Beach
Highlights of day one was Seeing Matilda the Kangaroo at the morning tea stop, used in the 1982 Commonwealth games in Brisbane. The spectacular views from Rainbow Beach Surf Club, and the food was wonderful! The drive from Rainbow via the back roads to Maryborough was a scenic drive that most on board had not done before. Along the drive the coach caption provided spot commentary for the passengers on some of the history of the areas they passed.
Day 2: Whale Watching in Hervey Bay
We boarded the “Spirit of Hervey Bay” for a wonderful half day on the water. With a slow start the crew served a lovely morning tea on the way to see the whales. With many whales spotted in the distance the captain was full ahead getting the boat in the best position possible to witness babies, mothers and even some bustling males. We witnessed one calf that was having a wonderful time leaping out of the water many times to the joys of all on board! The afternoon was at leisure, staying close to the Urangan Pier saw the passengers enjoying short walks or some rest time in the well-appointed rooms of Urangan Motor Inn.
Day 3: Hervey Bay to Brisbane, via Tiaro and Noosa
Homeward bound, morning tea was at a lovely little park in Tiaro before continuing on to Noosa. Here the passengers were able to explore the shops and cafes of Hastings street, the lovely main beach and have a bite to eat for lunch. Due to the heat of the day the ice cream shop was very popular! Continuing home along David Low Way following the coast line was a lovely scenic way to depart Noosa before getting back on the main highway heading back to Brisbane.
The group had a wonderful time and look forward to their next adventure with a Sunstate Speciality Tour!
